As events would later prove, the fight on the plains of Champagne marked a turning point in the war. The Germans had suffered tremendous losses while utterly failing to achieve their objectives. Reims remained in Allied hands, and Paris was safe from any German attack. The next step in the war would bring an end to fighting in the trenches and initiate something new in the war: offensive operations fought in the open. On July 22, the 166th entrained at St. Hilaire-au-Temple and headed for a new position north of Château-Thierry, where they would join the forces gathering for a great Allied offensive.76

As they would soon discover, however, this new phase of the war would come at an even higher cost.
